New to ANU Series: General

Disclaimer: This post is based on my own experience.

Things to get when arrival:

  1. Student ID (ANU student central)

  2. Bank card

  3. Sim Card (ALDI Mobile, Boost and Kogan cheaper option than Telstra, Vodafone and Optus)

  4. Get your Tax File Number (TFN) (avoid tax charge on interest and eligible for tax free threshold for jobs)

  5. Myway bus card (Supa 24)

  6. Flybuy card (Coles)

  7. Proof of identity card (avoid taking passport around)

Application recommended to download:

  1. OSHC app for health insurance

  2. Lost on Campus app for finding classroom or google map

  3. Doctors app to search for doctor

  4. HotDoc app to make appointment with Health Co-op (after register in-person)

Facebook Group recommended to join:

  1. ANU Schmidtposting for better access to the ANU FB community

  2. Free & For Sale for good bargain

  3. Canberra Notice Board

Getting Around Canberra

  1. Use Ola for cheaper e-hailing rides (use promo code) than Uber

  2. Register Goget if you keen to drive around Canberra once a while

Getting Books and Journals

  1. Buy ebook unless the course requires physical book (contact me if you need Accounting or Finance ebook)

  2. Utilise ANU library super search or Google scholar to find journals

  3. ANU Library has many newspaper, magazine and journals subscription

  4. To access free journals, copy and add journal DOI at the back of: https://sci-hub.st/

General Tip

  1. Use ANU Unofficial Timetable planner for easier view (compare with ANU Timetable viewer to validate)

  2. Input all your appointments and classes in one calendar for easy planning

  3. ANU Sports provide variety of free fitness class

  4. If applying for Club Lime, do use reference code to avoid admin fees (unsure is this still applicable)

  5. Research for more bank choices of interest rate to benefit from bank introductory rate)

  6. If you know how to read and type Chinese, contact me and I will send you some useful WeChat page.

  7. ANU Degree Planner

  8. Join cultural society (MSO, SSA, ACYA, VSA, TSA, ISA)

  • Free food and good discount from restaurant

  • Join events to know more about people from your nationality or other

Benefits that are On-hold due to COVID-19

  1. BKSS provide free breakfast everyday and Student Bites on every Friday for free grocery

  2. Free pizza and drink at CBE every 2 weeks (Thursday)

  3. Fenner Hall every Wednesday for free bread
